The program

Unifei’s Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering (PPG-E), currently linked to the Institute of Electrical Systems and Energy (ISEE) and the Institute of Information Systems and Technologies (IESTI), consists of the Master’s and Doctoral programs.
The Master’s Degree Program started in 1968 and the Doctoral Degree in 1995. Since 1998, 85 Doctoral theses and 322 Master’s dissertations have been defended.
Through both its programs, and its three concentration areas (Potency Electrical Systems, Automation and Industrial Electrical Systems, and Microelectronics) the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering aims to:

  • In Master’s students, develop the ability of carrying out research, dominating applied scientific methodologies and deepen students’ professional and academic knowledge in their chosen dissertation’s theme;
  • In Doctoral students, develop the ability of leading original researches and creating leaders in their acting areas.

In order to reach these goals, the program currently offers 39 general formation subjects and five curricular components, which are: oriented studies for both Master’s and Doctoral programs, dissertation work, preparation to qualification, thesis work and teaching internship.
All subjects offered belong to the program as a whole, and not just to the Master’s or Doctoral programs, in exception of directed studies, which have different regulations for each course. Students of the Master’s program may only take directed studies once, while Doctoral program students may take it twice. The content of directed studies is variable and related to the student’s final paper topic, which is adjustable according to the student’s and supervisor’s interests, in agreement with the chosen research theme.
Teaching internships are mandatory curricular activities for scholarship students of the Doctoral program and optional for non-scholarship students. Scholarship students must enroll and take part on teaching internships at least twice, and at most three times during the course of their Doctoral program. The content of directed studies varies according work theme content, the student’s interest and to the research being developed.
In order to successfully conclude the Master’s program, students need to earn 24 credits (equivalent to eight subjects); 36 credits are needed for completing the Doctoral program, 24 of which may be carried over from the Master’s program.
Program completion takes 12 to 36 months (for the Master’s program) and 24 to 72 months (for the Doctoral program). After completing the program, the student will receive the title of either Master of Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.
